What Story is Running the Show?

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

In my journey of self-discovery, I’ve peeled back the layers of the onion who I am. One of those layers is our core beliefs. These are the stories we have about ourselves which are usually formed in our earliest experiences.

For a significant part of my life, the story that ran the show was: I am not important.

This belief influenced every aspect of my life – how I let others treat me, putting others’ needs before mine, and even how I contributed at work. For years, I ran away from people and places where I felt insignificant. I kept asking myself: Why does this keep happening to me? Why don’t others face the same struggles? Why do people take advantage of my kindness?

It wasn’t until I began the inner de-weeding I realised how this core belief was shaping my thoughts, words, and actions. By oozing a sense of unworthiness, I naturally attracted situations, people, and dynamics that reinforced that belief.

The turning point came through a painful experience that forced me to confront the truth: my beliefs were shaping my reality. (Thank you, pain.)This was very hard to accept because it meant the responsibility was mine. But it was also liberating precisely because it was mine! If my beliefs created my reality, then I had the power to change it.

I changed the narrative to: I am important and began to experience freedom from misery. My actions and interactions with the world shifted, and so did my experiences. I could finally distinguish between my subconscious’s stories and the truth of who I am.

When we understand our true Self—beyond the stories, beliefs, and conditioning that have been ingrained over time—we can align with our true essence rather than limiting beliefs. This empowers us to create our experience of life, unbound by the constraints of mental constructs. And that is ultimate liberation because our happiness and well-being no longer depend on others’ treatment of us.

Questions to ponder:

What are my core beliefs?

How were they formed?

In what situations do they show up?

What new narrative can I choose?
